This includes a Biosafety Level 2 development laboratory; deep competency in user needs assessment; and team members dedicated to clinical field evaluations, project management, product introduction, and commercialization.

Fellowship overview:

Diagnostic developers and manufacturers need a clear definition of the technical specifications and market potential for new diagnostics for malaria elimination. Furthermore, policymakers need clarity on the accuracy, quality, and utility of available and forthcoming infection detection technologies to implement their elimination strategies. PATH, FIND and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are working in partnership to advance the availability of more sensitive tests for malaria to support elimination strategies, with a specific aim to more accurately identify asymptomatic people who carry and therefore can transmit and propagate the disease.

Human C-reactive protein (CRP) is a marker of inflammation that is associated with infections and other chronic diseases. The dynamics of CRP during malaria infection, especially early-stage infection and in relation with other P. falciparum biomarkers (i.e., parasitemia and histidine-rich protein 2), has not yet been characterized. The project aims to measure P. falciparum biomarkers including CRP using specimens from human challenge study and field collections. The Biostatistician Fellow will be solely responsible for analyzing this data to further define CRP in the context of malaria infection.

Fellowship goals and learning objectives:

The Biostatistics Fellow will improve his/her ability to apply various statistical methods to the design, analysis and interpretation of research studies, specifically to data around malaria field studies. The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with PATH scientists in the planning of laboratory investigations and analysis of resultant data using existing methodologies.
