Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Statistics Division (SD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), based in New York. The Statistics Intern will report to the head of a unit or to a Statistician. 
The DESA/SD internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department. 

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

The Intern will work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the unit to which he/she is assigned.
Responsibilities
The Statistics Intern will be responsible for the following one or more duties in economic, demographic and social statistics: Assists in designing, organizing, planning and managing the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of economic, demographic or social statistics. Assists in developing, implementing and managing databases for economic, demographic or social statistics. Assists in training and technical support on data collection programmes, country practices and other related information in economic, demographic or social statistics. Assists in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications by performing methodological research in economic, demographic or social statistics. Assists in data discovery and analysis studies by conducting research in a specific subject matter area. Assist in visualizing data in a variety of formats and media. Prepares draft technical documents for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assists in drafting relevant reports in economic, demographic or social statistics. Assists in the organization of seminars, working groups and expert meetings related to economic, demographic or social statistics. Performs other duties as assigned.

The intern is expected to: 
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and 
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: 
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or 
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

• Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Knowledge and experience in demography, statistics, mathematics, economics, or related area is an advantage.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
