ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Applied Scientist II (ICR) serves as an Applied Scientist for the Wyoming Chapter. S/he works collaboratively with Chapter staff to develop and lead scientific surveys/monitoring and research or to support existing research studies, to support on-the-ground conservation projects. In the course of work, the Applied Scientist II (ICR) is expected to collect, record and analyze tabular and spatial data on wildlife and plant species, ecosystems, and threats, write and publish reports, and communicate research results effectively. The Applied Scientist develops proposals in order to support research, as needed, and engages with funders and donors to explain and promote ongoing or future work. The Applied Scientist works to develop collaborative research partnerships across Wyoming to enhance the reach and efficacy of the science program. S/he works closely as a member of a two-person science team to assess gaps in research needs and to set conservation and research priorities. S/he works in collaboration with Wyoming chapter conservation staff to provide necessary scientific information and analysis to support statewide and regional chapter initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
  • Engages in collaborative scientific investigations to support priority research questions (may lead and develop, or support – as needed depending on the project). Provides fieldwork and logistical support for research, project development and monitoring. Manages spatial and tabular project data effectively. May manage a grant, contract or develop requests for proposals.
  • Supports on-the ground conservation staff needs by delivering analysis and summary of complex conservation/biodiversity data, supporting research needs, and training, as needed.
  • Engages with universities, agencies and other NGOs effectively to build dynamic research partnerships.
  • Communicate results effectively to staff, board, and partners in a variety of forms (peer-reviewed publications, blogs, donor letters, verbal presentations etc.)
  • May lead staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.
  • On many occasions may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires occasional travel, as well as working extended hours as necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate Degree in science related field and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading and working with cross functional teams.
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.
  • Experience preparing reports of findings.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide and diverse range of people
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to engage in a wide range of conservation issues, analyze complex problems, rapidly build personal/team expertise on new issues, and develop strategic responses or solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of common software applications relevant to science including ArcGIS and statistics packages (R or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of remote sensing software preferred
  • Knowledge of Western/Wyoming wildlife and ecosystems preferred
  • Experience creating partnerships with conservation colleagues, agencies, and/or academic institutions.
  • Strong written, visual, and verbal communication skills and experience translating complex technical and scientific issues to a broad range of audiences and across platforms (e.g. in-person presentations to social media).
  • Demonstrated ability to work across teams and collaboratively with a wide and diverse range of individuals that do not have a direct reporting relationship, including staff, partner organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Models and supports a culture of strong teamwork, communication, collaboration and accountability
