Responsibilities
  1. Participate in all orientation and training activities for the medical interpreters and staff; successfully complete Bridging the Gap Medical Training (if haven’t already)
  2. Assist in facilitating communication between medical staff and refugee clients by providing literal interpretation on-site.   Provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers and staff in person or over the telephone. 
  3. Assist health professionals with non-English/limited English speaking patients in filling out a variety of forms for program eligibility, registration and medical history, as instructed by the Interpreter Coordinator.
  4. Assist in creating and/or coordinating written translation services and access to other multilingual resources as requested/necessary.
  5. Translate written materials and prepare written reports as needed or instructed by the Interpreter Coordinator.
  6. Communicate regularly with the Health Program Manager and/or IRC staff about outcomes of appointments/services provided.
  7. Prepare written reports/case notes of outcomes of medical appointments
  8. When requested, remind clients of appointments and explain or arrange for transportation.
  9. May require transportation of clients to appointments.
  10. Comply with all policies and protocols of the agency.
  11. Participate in all program meetings and staff development activities.
  12. Other duties as assigned

Requirements
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and client languages needed: Sudanese Arabic (preference given to Zaghawa speakers)
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional interpreting and previous experience working with refugees preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work independently as well as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work well with people, such as refugee clients, local service providers, field professionals, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license; current and legally sufficient insurance and reliable transportation
