POSITION SUMMARY
The Preserve and Maintenance Technician performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Preserve and Maintenance Technician maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public. S/he trims and mows vegetation to maintain access on preserve trails, paths, sidewalks and roadsides. S/he maintains and repairs tools, equipment, small engines, and vehicles. S/he completes basic repairs on preserve infrastructure including the interior and exterior of eight buildings. S/he opens and closes preserve to the visiting public and interacts with visitors politely and informatively. The Preserve and Maintenance Technician performs other stewardship tasks as requested. S/he may be required to work occasional Saturdays and/or Sundays.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
  • Maintains the preserve’s facilities, buildings, grounds, and infrastructure. Paying special attention to areas frequented by the visiting public.
  • Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers.
  • Can work in variable weather conditions, on moderately difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
  • Requires moderately long hours in semi-isolated settings.
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • Requires experience operating various types of tools, vehicles and equipment in a safe and productive manner.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and perform tasks in a safe manner.
  • May work under infrequent supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2 + years’ experience in landscaping, carpentry, small engine repair, and/or other trade skills.
  • Other trade skills, such as, mechanical, plumbing and AC.
  • Project management skills
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management
  • Respect for native plants, animals, natural systems and environmental conservation
  • Can identify common wetland and upland native plants and animals of Florida.
  • Ability to use Microsoft programs like Word and Excel, and the internet.
  • Ability to meet internal Youth Safety qualification standards. To be Youth Qualified, one must 1) consent to and successfully complete a background screening; 2) sign the Commitment to Youth Safety; and, 3) complete two online courses (approximately 30 minutes each) through Learn@TNC
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
Status - Hourly, 19.5 hours per week

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
