Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Acting Chief of the Group Programmes Unit and Public Inquiries Unit, the Associate Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:


Plan, coordinate and supervise the organization of large briefing programmes within GPU for a wide variety of groups (Model UNs, UNA-USA, Lions Club, Rotary Club, etc).
* by arranging and facilitating briefings and conferences at UN Headquarters, as well as arranging for speakers for programmes away from UN Headquarters.
*Make arrangements for briefing facilities and for all the services required by coordinating with Security, Conference Services, Facilities Management, and others

Coordinate all activities of the three-week annual Reham Al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme at UNHQ.
*Select a list of developing countries to participate in the Programme based on past participation, regional distribution and other criteria.
*Plan and schedule daily briefings, an academic workshop, visits to media organizations in New York and other relevant activities for the participating journalists reflecting topics and issues discussed in the UN General Assembly.
*Oversee implementation of RAF Programme at UNHQ.
*Coordinate assignments and delegate responsibilities to team members, follow-up operations and keep up-to-date records, documents and archive in online shared drive and in Unite Docs.
*Draft and submit requests for pre-approvals and services to Executive Office.
*Conduct a Programme evaluation and submit recommendations for next year.

Serve as focal point and contact person for all communications pertaining to the RAF Programme.
*Liaise with field offices, regarding selection, acceptance and with United States embassies regarding visas of the participants.
*Reply to queries, requests and clarifications from participants and speakers.
*Maintain contact and communicate with Director's Office, Executive Office and American Express Travel Office.
*Advertise and publicize the RAF Programme within the UN System and around the world.
*Draft and issue a UN press release about the Programme.
*Draft and submit a story about the Programme in iSeek and in DPI Updates and Heads-up newsletters.
*Facilitate writing stories and creating video clip about the Programme and work of the UN by the participants.
*Maintain RAF website and update the content as needed.
*Maintain the RAF Programme Facebook and Twitter accounts.
*Collect all feedback and recommendations submitted by past participants, briefings officers and others.

Maintain the budget and handle all financial issues of the RAF Programme.
*Register all expenditures in a spreadsheet table and update available funds accordingly.
*Submit invoices for processing and relevant travel documents for clearance.
*Follow-up on all financial issues and invoice clearances with the Executive Office and obtain a summary expenditure performance report, as needed.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Education or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience in related area may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or a related area is required. Experience managing events is required. Direct experience working with journalists is desirable.

No experience is required for candidates who have passed the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP) / United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency based interview.
