Description

Summary
The Specialist, Nutrition and Social Behavior Change (SBC) provides technical support in community nutrition and social and behavior change for Save the Children nutrition programs. The Specialist, Community Nutrition and SBC supports a portfolio of on-going nutrition programs in West Africa region, and also supports community system strengthening and Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) activities in Africa. S/he supports and contributes more broadly across the Department of Global Health (DGH)’s nutrition and SBCC efforts in sharing program experiences and lessons learned. The Specialist, Nutrition and SBC provides technical assistance, specifically supporting several on-going programs in Mali, and development food and assistance programs (DFAPs) in Niger and Burkina Faso. S/he focuses on quality implementation of programs, and reporting and documentation. S/he will be a key member of the DGH linking the nutrition and SBCC teams, and contributing to project knowledge management , and delivering on project results. This position works with the Nutrition and the SBCC teams of Save the Children's Department of  Global Health, collaborates closely with the Department of Hunger and Livelihoods and with members of Save the Children International (SCI) to advance our global nutrition agenda.
Responsibilities and Impact
In collaboration with the Advisor, Nutrition, and the Senior Advisor, SBCC, the Specialist, Nutrition and SBC supports a nutrition and CSS-SBC portfolio, with emphasis on West Africa programs. S/he will work closely with project technical and management (COPs) staff in country to determine and meet technical assistance needs, including assisting with required donor documentation of program progress and results, and learning activities. S/he provides leadership to support and document innovation and experience in nutrition and SBCC gained through these projects, and developing and strengthening relationships between SCI Country Offices and SC-US nutrition team. The Specialist,  Nutrition and Social and Behavior Change additionally focuses on linking the SBCC and Nutrition team’s work in SBCC and CSS to align, build and document this experience across Save the Children US as well as Save the Children International through these project activities.
Technical Support and Expertise for Save the Children Programs and Member Country Initiatives (70%)
  • Support the design, refinement and implementation of SC nutrition projects, and nutrition and SBCC activities in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger and other countries as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance in community mobilization to sponsorship programs in selected countries (ie. Mali and Zambia) under mentorship of the behavior change and community health team
  • Ensure high quality projects by maintaining close and regular contact with key project counterparts— project leads, other project technical staff and SCI CO leadership and technical staff as necessary.
  • Develop effective communication and reporting mechanisms and share project updates (challenges and successes) with Nutrition team leadership.
  • Travel to country offices as needed to provide on-the-ground technical support including capacity building for national staff as required.
Coordination and Collaboration across Departments (DHL and DGH) and within DGH on nutrition and SBCC (10%)
  • Enable effective, on-going communication mechanisms across and within the departments sharing relevant project experience, and other information as needed
  • Assist in refining SBCC frameworks and tools
Contribute to Knowledge Management (10%)
  • Contribute to Save the Children and departmental learning and knowledge-sharing activities and priorities. Specific tasks may include documentation and dissemination of program results and updating information on SC’s internal knowledge management systems
  • Engage in departmental working groups as needed to advance strategic positioning of Nutrition and SBCC
Support Resource Mobilization, both Private and Public (10%)
  • Assist in developing long-term funding strategies for SC's technical and programming priorities in nutrition and SBCC
  • Through project experience, and linkages with the SCI country offices, help to network, identify, and secure funding to expand and grow nutrition work
  • Support proposal development processes, providing technical inputs, review and guidance, and drafting text as needed for proposals, work plans and reports
Required Background and Experience, Skills and Behaviors

  • Experience implementing health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene or similar programs in developing county contexts in French speaking West Africa;
  • Post-graduate education (master’s or higher) preferred, high school degree required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in public health, nutrition, health sciences, or related field and demonstrated experience in implementation of community-based and SBCC nutrition and related activities in developing countries;
  • Demonstrated ability to address behavior change issues in improving household nutrition status;
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills, collaboration experience, creativity and willingness to innovate;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in team situations;
  • Familiarity and understanding of USAID policies and procedures, or those of other donors, or those of donor-funded projects or community-based projects a plus;
  • Fluent oral and strong analytical, written English communications skills is required;
  • Excellent spoken and proficient French communications skills required;
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally about 30% of time.
